Recipe for Mixed Vegetable Caldine

Recipe for Mixed Vegetable Caldine

Caldine, be it Fish, Prawn or Cauliflower, used to be my Nana's favourite curry. She would make pieces of bread and dunk it into the curry and eat it. She used to call it Sweet Curry as this curry does not contain Red Chillies like the usual curries do and so, we too started calling it that. As kids, we would go to her house and the minute we knew it was "sweet curry day" we would grab that orange and white flower chair closest to the table, be seated with our chaddis(most comfortable) be the best version of ourselves and wait for Nana to dunk in those soft bread pieces and feed us by closing her eyes, stretching her hand with each morsel out and waiting for us to eat that morsel pretending that the "Kanwdo" (crow) came and took it . That is the ONLY way Nana(or anyone) could bluff me into eating Cauliflower! That memory will be etched forever in my Heart. My Mum continued Nana's feeding style of the "crow" ritual with all of us cousins and now we do it with our kids too. So much fun 🙂 🙂

Recipe for Caldine Masala

Recipe for Caldine Masala

At home, We call Caldine “Sweet Curry” as this is a very mild curry with no spice nor spicy red Chillies like the other Goan curries. Whenever we are under the weather, my Mum makes this light and simple “Sweet Curry” for us. I remember My Mom making this curry for any of our family members who are unwell, especially the Elder folk, she always takes a container of “sweet curry” for them. But she uses White Pomfrets in the curry so that it is easier and light to digest this curry base is so versatile and you can use any Fish and Vegetables of your choice. You can also make this using a combination of various Vegetables. This is a recipe for 500 gms Fish, Prawn or Veg

Recipe for Nana’s Sweet Curry – Caldine

Recipe for Nana’s Sweet Curry – Caldine

Whenever we used to go to Nana’s place, she would give us a bread each and tell us to make pieces and dunk it into the ‘sweet curry’ Her style of eating was to make pieces of the bread and soak them into the curry and then eat and I used to wonder why is Nana eating like this? And when I asked her she replied “Arey its fun to eat like this try it out” and when nobody was in the room my grandpa would quietly tell me “Arey she doesn’t want anyone to know that she doesn’t have teeth.. shhhh” haha Such are Grandparents and we live on with their beautiful memories🙏😊 Caldine is a Traditional Goan Coconut curry which uses very minimum spices. It tastes sweet and tangy and can be made using Mixed Vegetables or Prawns or Cauliflower or Pumpkin and Prawns or Fish.  The best part about this curry is that it can be enjoyed by all age groups! I’d like to share my Nana’s simple Sweet Curry(Caldine) with all of you!  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did as a child😊
