Southern Croque Madame with a Fall Twist

This is a delicious variation on the classic French Croque Madame. Mine has a
bit of Southern flair and a few fall flavors - perfect for this cozy season!

Pumpkin Bread

sliced
Mayonnaise
Cheddar Cheese

sliced (I used a Colby Jack blend)
Deli Ham

sliced
Apples

sliced
Fig spread
Butter
Shredded Cheese Blend

I used a blend of mozzarella, fontina, parmesan, etc...
Egg

Instructions

1 First, spread mayo on your bread then top with cheese.
2 Top the cheese with ham.
3 Place sliced apples on top of the ham.
4 Place a little more cheese on top of the ham – I like to have cheese on each end
of the sandwich for extra melty flavor! Add a smear of Fig spread and you’re
ready to begin grilling.
5 My butter was cold so I didn’t spread it on the bread. Instead, I placed a few
pats of butter in a pan and let it begin to melt. Then into the pan went the
sandwich.
6 Once the first side was nice and toasty, it’s time to flip! This is also a good
time to turn on the broiler in your toaster oven.
7 Once the bread is as toasty as you desire, place your sandwich on a foil lined
baking sheet and top with the shredded cheese.
8 Place this in the toaster to melt the cheese on top.
9 Meanwhile, back at the pan, place another pat of butter in the pan and crack in
your egg. I like a soft center (but not too soft) so I let it sit for a couple
of minutes and then flip. Once the egg is cooked to your liking, slide it right
on top of the sandwich and serve immediately with a bit of salt & pepper.
